As India's asset management industry evolves and technology reshapes investment decisions, what will set successful finance professionals apart? Students of SP Jain Global’s Master of Applied Finance & Wealth Management (MFWM) program explored this question during a guest session with Hirak Bhattacharjee, Head - Corporate HR, Talent Staffing & Employee Relations at Aditya Birla Capital.

Drawing on over 27 years of cross-industry experience, Hirak discussed the growth of India's asset management sector, highlighting trends such as systematic investment plans (SIPs), passive investing and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). He also pointed to the potential for further growth in mutual fund participation, given India's relatively low penetration compared with developed economies.

The discussion explored how artificial intelligence and data analytics are transforming investment management. Hirak emphasised that research, critical thinking and sound judgement remain essential for informed investment decisions, even as technology changes how the industry operates.

He also outlined career opportunities across investment research, fund management, wealth management, credit and treasury. Beyond technical expertise, he stressed the importance of continuous learning, product knowledge, understanding client needs, adaptability and integrity. He concluded by sharing five principles for professional success: knowledge, integrity, impact, stress management and mentorship.

The session connected emerging industry trends with the skills and mindset students need to build careers in financial services.
