What does a wealth manager do beyond managing investments? For the Master of Applied Finance and Wealth Management (MFWM) program students, a guest session with Sonali Dahiya, Group Head of Burgundy Private, Axis Bank, offered some answers.

Drawing from three decades of experience in financial services, Sonali spoke about how wealth management has changed. Today, clients expect more than investment advice. They also look to their wealth managers for guidance on succession planning, estate planning, tax efficiency and managing wealth across generations.

The session also looked at the growing role of AI in wealth management. She shared how technology can support wealth managers with research, portfolio analysis, meeting preparation and client insights. At the same time, she highlighted the importance of judgment, empathy and strong client relationships.

For students, the discussion also opened a wider view of where the industry is heading. India’s growing affluent population, entrepreneurial wealth and the rise of family offices are creating new opportunities in private banking and wealth management. Alternative investments and global asset allocation are also becoming an important part of the industry.

The conversation gave students a practical understanding of what it takes to work with high-net-worth clients today. It also highlighted the importance of staying updated, building strong relationships and continuously developing new skills.

Sessions like these are an important part of the MFWM program, giving students the opportunity to hear directly from experienced professionals and understand how the industry is evolving.
