  • National Child Development Research Centre
The National Child Development Research Centre (NCDRC) and Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) in Malaysia have developed the National Child Data Centre (NCDC), a web-based database designed to collect and centralize comprehensive data on children (0-3+ years), nurseries, and educators/caregivers. This database aims to support various stakeholders, including PERMATA, KEMAS, YPKT, and SWD, in planning and implementing structured programs aligned with Malaysia's National Children's Care and Early Childhood Care Policy, focusing on holistic child development. The development of NCDC was prompted by a feasibility study that identified strong support for a centralized system to improve the quality of early childhood care and education, enhance research, policy development, and public awareness, aligning with Malaysia's 10th Malaysia Plan. NCDC's rich data includes child profiles, TASKA staff information, and TASKA (childcare center) details. This data supports early detection and intervention, particularly for special needs children, as well as research and program expansion for children aged 3 months to 4 years. The system allows registered users to access data and encourages regular updates from TASKA centres. As of the present, NCDC has profiled over seventy thousand children, five thousand TASKA centres, and twenty thousand TASKA staff nationwide, although there is still much room for expanding child-profiled data. Additionally, NCDC is evolving to include data analytics and visualization, aiming to create predictive models that can identify intervention opportunities and improve child and community outcomes. The system emphasizes obtaining data on children non-intrusively through observation and one-on-one assessments, both at home and in early childhood centers. It also calls for new regulations and local jurisdiction enforcement to ensure the integrity of teacher updates regarding each child's progress and background details. NCDC holds the potential to become a national data analytics hub, providing valuable insights for policymakers, industries, and parties interested in children's health and well-being by integrating data from various sources, including other databases related to health, welfare, and statistics.
  • Elderly fall analysis using XAI
A future project is planned to classify fall risk in community-dwelling older adults using computerized posturography in standing conditions, with a focus on leveraging machine learning techniques to handle complex data characterized by high dimensionality, non-linearity, and strong correlations. This endeavor aims to enhance interpretability by incorporating an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach. The analysis will encompass a total of 215 participants from clinical testing, with input data comprising demographic features and posturographic parameters obtained through tracker-based posturography in four standing postures. Two classification criteria will be utilized, one involving a fear behavior questionnaire (the Stay Independent Brochure) and the other utilizing the timed-up-and-go test. To manage the extensive parameter set and improve efficiency, two meta-heuristic methods for feature selection will be applied, with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method employed to illustrate the significance of selected features within the model. Expected outcomes include enhanced accuracy, achieved through both the Harris Hawk Optimization and Slime Mould Algorithm compared to the model lacking feature selection. Additionally, the SHAP values will provide insights into the relative importance of various features within the model. This project underscores the potential utility of ML algorithms and XAI in developing more robust and accurate fall classification models. Notably, this project benefits from an academy-industry collaboration between the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) and the Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech). It has received support from the National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin branch under grant numbers NTUHYL 111.AI004. The funding body will not be involved in the study's design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, or manuscript writing. A team of researchers will lead the project, including Huey-Wen Liang from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, National Taiwan University Hospital and College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC, along with Rasoul Ameri, Sung-Yu Ho, and Arthur Chang from the Department of Information Management, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Douliu, Taiwan, ROC. Shahab S. Band and Bilal Zaidan, affiliated with the International Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence, Douliu, Taiwan, ROC, and the Future Technology Research Center, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Douliu, Taiwan, ROC, will also contribute. Furthermore, Hsin-Shui Chen from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, National Taiwan University Hospital Yulin Branch, Douliu, Taiwan, ROC, and Kai-Chieh Chang from the Department of Neurology, National Taiwan University Hospital Yulin Branch, Douliu, Taiwan, ROC, will participate in the project.
