Open Mic morning: No slides, just ideas

Sometimes the best learning happens when there are no slides, no notes, just people sharing what they think.

The Master of Applied Finance and Wealth Management (MFWM) classroom recently turned into an open mic space where students spoke about what’s happening in finance today and why it matters. No presentations, no formal prep but just students sharing their thoughts in their own words.

What made the session interesting was how quickly it moved from basic ideas to real conversations. Students spoke about market changes, investor behaviour, and how financial decisions are becoming more personal and complex.

A few simple but strong takeaways stood out:

    • Staying updated matters more than memorising concepts
    • There’s rarely one ‘right’ answer in finance
    • Listening to different viewpoints can change how you think

For many students, the experience was new. Speaking without preparation pushed them to think clearly and express ideas simply. Listening to classmates helped them see topics from angles they hadn’t considered before.

Guided by Professor Saurabh Saraswat, this short session showed that learning doesn’t always need structure. It sometimes just needs a space to speak and listen.
